Josh Woodward was seen as a posh kid having been to Walsall Grammar School in the 1930s. Before going into the family leather business his father wanted him to have work experience of hard work, long hours and out in all weathers as well as having to deal with people under trying circumstances. He arranged for Josh to have an apprentice-ship in life by putting him with a family that lived and worked on the canals. Josh tells his own story of his trials and tribulations during that period as he revisits the canal with his 10 year old son. He is shocked to find all that he had known had almost completely disappeared and the canals were in what appeared to be terminal decline.
